não importa o astro ou planeta

que nos ilumina ou se esconde

nas horas da penumbra interior 

não me digas que só lês as cartas

os búzios ou as palmas da mão

nas estrelas na ampulheta há mais palavras 

tempos extra dos verbos por conjugar

leias ou não os meus olhos

atenta no que não digo e nos retalhos

dispersos no chão na mesa na cama 

espalhadas mensagens do muito por dizer  

letras grandes ou pequenas

todas escrevem de mim todas me falam 

de ti que mais queres que eu te diga?

dirás que sim direi eu 

as únicas estrelas que se reflectem no rio

debruçadas luzes da cidade serão

os teus dedos ao lerem o meu corpo

João S Martins Brings new Insights

on How to Become a Poet

Woodbridge, NJ (9/23/2014) - Portuguese-American author João S Martins published this month a new bilingual book (Portuguese/ English) entitled quando menino eu lia… Iread as a boy… that explores the thoughtful process of searching for poetic substance.

 

Martins grew up in Portugal, where his family, especially his mother, promoted reading. Now he takes us on a beautifully written poetic journey that centers on the impact of his reading and life experiences on his poetic voice, from childhood to adulthood.

 

This new book is the personal and artistic journey of a poet in search of the ingenious form to echo poetically his true self. quando menino eu lia... I readas a boy… is a celebration of the fulfillment achieved by reading and writing. It is an insight that shares in the craving for awareness and originality.

polifonia de sonhos intactos

     pode ser partida a minha fala
     mantenho os sonhos intactos.
     se bem que os sonhos podem ser
     sonhados em qualquer linguagem
     torna-se mais fácil sonhar
     nas palavras que aprendemos
     com o leite e com os sonhos maternos
     tão universais como o coração.

     em casa sonhávamos e falávamos em polifonia:

     na minha linguagem de berço ensinava os filhos
     (daí dependiam os laços com o longe e o tempo)
     e na linguagem deles eu aprendia
     as novas cores dos sonhos.
     e de palavra em palavra de sonho
     em sonho e nos verbos do coração
     em vez de laços quebrados
     temos braços ligados

     desde o tempo em que os sentimentos nos ficaram

     das raízes doutros tempos
     e os sonhos ligaram as raízes aos frutos e ao futuro.
     esse mesmo futuro como um livro
     agora com novas páginas novas palavras
     novos sonhos partilhados.
 

     continuaremos a usar as palavras

     e os sentimentos mais antigos
     para construir os sonhos do amanhã.
     como ontem qualquer que seja
     a língua e as palavras
     contam os corações. e agora somos mais!...

"I read as a boy..." - Preface

Joao Martins’ latest poetry book- quando menino eu lia.... is a much welcomed addition to a personal production centered on his life long passionate quest for artistic expression, whether in the form of poetic writing, music, photography, painting and wood carving.  This new book constitutes a powerful poetic and spiritual exploration of the many stages of the poet’s quest since childhood to adulthood that ends up joyfully confirming the poet’s timeless poetic vocation and his eternal quest to forge, create, and construct different growing imaginative worlds (childhood, youth, adulthood). This is an excellent, beautifully written and intellectual text, focusing first on that extraordinary world of a menino’s discovery of the magic world of words.  It is the personal and artistic journey of someone intensely and passionately searching for the appropriate form of art to capture, structure and enunciate his poetic self at different stages of life.

Chilean Nobel Prize Laureate Pablo Neruda once stated that if people would ask him what his poetry was about,  he did not know.  But added that by going directly to his texts, the poetry would more precisely reveal who he was.  In the same way,  Joao Martins’ poetry, in the best tradition of  Whitman, Marti, Pessoa, Borges, Neruda,  is the vehicle to enter to the literary and philosophical ideas and beliefs that embrace his poetic pathos.  What interests the most are not necessarily the anecdotical biographic circumstances (always present in any text) but how  human experiences determining, shaping or affecting the formation of the poet’s world and his inter relations with society and surrounding world transcend and speak to all.   
 

In this remarkable voyage to the origins- to the home where the passion for reading and writing was ignited- the poet combines the personal and historical, the past and the present, memory and daydreams, the echoes of life in the village and in the city, the old and the modern into a particular  “alloy” marked with impressive imagery, profound insights, varied rhythmic stanzas and different musical tones. 

quando menino eu lia...is an ode to the pleasures of reading and writing.    It is an invitation to partake in the journey of learning and yearning for knowledge and freedom.  To read is to know and to be free, and to read this book is to learn about Joao Martins’ genuine and authentic love for words.
